Souloscrambler,
If you are solo and and want to scramble (over lots of scree) take a look at the Clear Creek route now as a dayhike. I have done it twice in sneakers as an early fall solo dayhike. It was cold and windy, so dress warm and pay attention to the weather forcasts. This route is mellow (horses have gone up it) without rockfall possibilities and glaciers are easily identified and bypassed. There are some springs early on up the route for possible water, but I do not recall water at the TH. I looked at the Shasta Cam a few days ago and then there seemed to be only a slight dusting of snow on this volcano.
The dirt road to the TH is easily navigated this time of year. However, your car might be the only one in the parking lot. Clear Creek and Mud Canyon are beautiful, relatively remote, and under appreciated areas of Mt Shasta. On my most recent dayhike up the Clear Creek Route (9/25/04) I saw no other person. Only one other person signed the summit register the previous week.
By the way, it seems your goal is to "knock out" your last California 14er. First I would check out Bob R's post today "Say it isn't so". Maybe Shasta is no longer on the 14er list!
If you go, I would be glad to get a trip report and hear about your findings.
Good luck, Jim
