I heard that Mammoth got snow. Anyone know if Mt. Whitney got dusted? I plan to do a hike on Tuesday but may cancel if there is snow on the ground.

There was very little new snow on Whitney as of Saturday afternoon. (You couldn't even call it a trace amount.)

When I left the Portal around 11:00am, skies were clear, so I don't think the storm that was mentioned in the forecasts made it this far south.

As mentioned in my Friday Forecast, this was primarily a Mono County system with light snow in Mammoth; temperatures really dropped on Sunday and right now things look a little unsettled for Monday and Tuesday. Blustery and cool conditions continue for Monday with a very slight chance of some light shower activity.

I was in the Northern Sierra (Tahoe National Forest)and I was pretty much served up the same wild weather. I was chased off the mountain (9k) by a rapidly moving front that included 50mph winds, and later on snow. I was curious if this was all part of the same storm that moved down the ridge.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Four to six inches of the white stuff fell Sunday afternoon north of Bass Lake at the 5,000 foot level.

By today, all of that may be gone.

To think it was 100° here in the San Joaquin Valley, aka "Dutch Oven," and Western Sierra foothills on the first day of fall.

Have fun.

Thanks. The car is all gassed up and I should be at the trailhead and starting to hike at 1:00 AM. There will be plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead. wink
