I am doing the Whitney trail 29th Sept for a 3 day hike up and back, staying at portal and base camp. Is there easy access to water (even if it needs purifying) on the route? If so, how much water are you carrying inter pickups? If not same questions!

Go ahead and get the book, MOUNT WHITNEY: Mountain Lore from the Mountain Store by Doug Thompson. It answers every question you can think of. There is also a list of places to find water on the trail on this site. Here it is:

As far as how much, everybody is different, but most say 3 liters after Trail Camp. Just check out this site and you will find lots of info.

Thanks for advice on both - I'd seen the pdf file you linked to - just wasn't sure just how close to the trail these stops are from the beaten path - any idea?

except for Consultation Lake, they are crossing the trail, or virtually adjacent.
