I agree with Jonerome. There often are a few snow storms in October, bringing cold weather and some snow. Often that snow melts and doesn't stay around that long. So in late October the trail can be mostly clear, with some icy areas. It seems the heavy snow piles up and stays around a little latter in the winter. That time of year, though, you need to be prepared for cold nights and possible bad weather. You will have a better idea a bit closer.
