Hi All, I'll be leaving my car at the portal but then need to find a ride to Sheppard's Pass TH. Any suggestions? I remember that there is an old guy in a pick-up that sometimes helps but can't find contact info. Also, how bad is the dirt road to Sheppard's Pass TH?

The dirt road to the stocker trailhead is fine. From there to the hiker trailhead is rough - but I've regularly seen 2WD vehicles there. I'm not exactly sure, but I think it's about 5 miles from the hiker trailhead to Onion Valley road - where hitching should be easy. Getting from the traihead to the road may require hoofing it, since the only traffi will be hikers exiting Shepherd.

Just a minor detail but it might be helpful to avoid confusion with directions, the trailhead you're looking for is called the Symmes Creek Trailhead. The Symmes Creek Trail leads to Sheppard's Pass. I think the signs from Onion Valley are labeled that way too.
