Anybody done the MR in mid-march? What are the ususal late winter snow conditions like? We are planning a trip up Whitney sometime around March 17th. What are the chance of getting up the road all the way to the trailhead? What is the routefinding like with snow and ice on the MR?

I drove up the Portal on 3/17/02 but I would think this would be the exception rather than the rule, just of couple of icy spots that were easily avoided.

I lot will depend on weather for the next month.

Mid-April through the end of May is generally the best time for good snow conditions on the MR. March is definitely mid-winter up there, not late-winter, and snowshoes to get to Iceberg Lake are likely still required. But it depends on the recent storms, your phasing relative to them, whether you are following others' tracks, time of day, etc. Mid to late March could be OK, but I wouldn't count on it. The last few years, though, have been pretty good.

I checked my log for March ascents of Whitney and other peaks accessed by the Portal road, and found 6 where I had made notes where we parked: 1985 (got to 7200'), 1992 (Meysan lot), 1999 twice (Portal both times), 2002 twice (Portal both times). But this is skewed because if winter storms dictate parking down at the Road Closed sign, there is less of a tendency to go for a climb here - hence no entry in my book.

Bill is right. It depends much more on the recent weather situation than the month, in winter.

If you have climbed the MR in summer, the route finding will be trivial for you. If you haven't, but can read a map and altimeter, and have done your homework, it is almost trivial. By March, there is almost always enough snow below LBS Lake that you will be going up the couloir instead of negotiating the Ebersbacher Ledges.

People worry about the last 300' above the notch at ~14000'. In winter this is just steep snow. You'll use ice ax and crampons, of course, and many people like to belay on it. Especially coming down.

Do most people who climb the MR in winter, descend the MR or would it be easier to descend the trail?

Virtually everyone who ascends the MR in winter descends that way as well. (1) To do otherwise would involve hauling everything to the summit and, since very few people can do a day climb of Whitney in winter, the full packs can be pretty heavy. (2) Most people are not totally familiar with the various routes on the mountain, so they choose to go down the way they came up - which is fresh in their minds. (3) The MR is much shorter (4.3 miles vs. 10.7 or 11.0 miles), so going back down that way is more appealing from a time and distance viewpoint.

Either way, though, especially in winter, is a stunning experience. In winter, the Sierra in general and the Whitney region in particular (because there are so many beautiful peaks and views there), are absolutely wonderful experiences. You will never forget them.

BTW, I drove up the Whitney Portal road this afternoon. There was about 3" of fresh snow down at the Road Closed sign, and several vehicles were parked there. I bet you can't get close to the Meysan parking spot right now. We didn't go higher than the sign because I was in my friend's brand new Nissan 350Z - and that is not exactly a snow machine.

On Monday, I plan to drive as high as I can and then snowshoe as high as I can. If I find out anything of interest, I'll make a post.

Bob,
Please let us know the portal road conditions when you get back. We are planning on going up on March 1st. Thanks.

Las
