There's more cool information about hiking and climbing Mt. Whitney via the Mountaineer's Route in Eastside magazine. That article can be found online at Eastside Magazine - On the Rocks - A Climb for the People

But rather than sneer at the masses who ascend its flanks every year, embrace the mountain’s majestic accessibility. I like this quote... It hits the nail on the head in regard to my feelings about the mountain and the reasons that I climb it so often.

"Hi" from long ago and not very far away. You might remember the name "Corky", a fine fellow who got carried away bitching about the Forest Service and was banned.
Nice to see your name again. I'll never forget the guy who has climbed Whitney in every month of the year! I was wondering if I would run across you.

Did anyone caught the mistake of the first sentence "BECAUSE IT’S THERE. That, of course, is Sir Edmund Hillary’s famous answer to the Everest question"
Was it not Mallory who made the quote famous? Historians have started questioning wheather he actually said that or maybe a misquote from a reporter. Anyway you looked at it, it should not be Sir E. Hillary.

Hillary. It was allegedly Mallory. Here is my version: "Some climb the mountain because it is there. Others climb the mountain to say they have been there. I climb the mountain because I want to be there." m.c.

One of the things that Edmund (not yet Sir) Hillary said in 1953 on his way back down through Nepal was "Well, we knocked the bastard off." I think I've heard that same sentiment a number of times at the Whitney Portal Store.

I know, I want it also. Rock, paper, scissors? maybe mc will let us borrow it occasionally. i'm using it and m.c. shortened it so it would be under 150 characters and meet board spec's. i'm not sure you need permission. but credit, where credit is due.

Dale B. Dalrymple I normally feel more like John Bachar's quote concerning a tough climb he had finished. Of course my climbs being mediocre in comparison I still feel respect for the mountain. "I felt hollow. Id gotten away with something. I hadn't conquered anything, the mountain had just let me off." John Bachar
