I want to thank Doug Thompson for autographing my copy of, Mount Whitney: Mountain Lore From The Whitney Store. I also want to thank you for an awesome pancake breakfast, sorry but it was the only thing I could not complete at Whitney this past weekend. I've seen pictures of it but in real life I couldn't believe my lying eyes when I picked up two orders of breakfast #2.

That reminds me of my first time to try the pancake breakfast, at the end of a trip from Horse Corral (via Colby Pass) to Portal. One of the guys on the trip had experience with it, and warned me that I would probably want to share it. But when I saw the menu that said 10" pancake with two eggs and four slices of bacon, I thought I could surely finish it. But when it showed up hanging over the edges of two plates, I realized I was in trouble.

The next year I took some scouts on a HSM to Portal trip, and told them that I would buy a shirt at the Portal store for any who finished their breakfast. Only one did. Funny thing was, five hours later when we stopped in Bakersfield for lunch, all he wanted was a glass of water.

Doug, you graciously autographed my copy of your book on Monday morning 8/31. You may recall I recounted my experience being caught in blizzard conditions on Mt San Jacinto in the 70's, cowboy camping. I was curious about the date so I Googled it and could only find, on 1/5/71 it was 1 degree at Idyllwild. My faulty memory recalls the date several years later and around Easter. All I know is that the temp dropped so fast and it got so cold it was actually painful to breath. If that date is correct then it was definitely sub zero conditions at the higher elevations.

It was a pleasure to meet you.

I just purchased and read this book last week. It was very enjoyable and informative. I may bring it with me next week to have Doug autograph it, should he be so gracious (and available). Of course, if I should encounter Elisabeth, I would love her JH as well!

I've read part's of the book while sitting around at the Store, but finally ordered my own copy.

Sitting around at the Store (listening to stories) is one thing you should not pass up on if you have the chance. It beats sitting in a motel room watching TV by a LONG SHOT.
