I've gone up Whitney a couple of times as an up-and-back. I'm too chicken for the mountaineers route, but would like to do a loop instead of my previous route. Is there a nice route from the Meysan Lakes trailhead up and over to Whitney, then taking the main trail down? That, or any loop originating in the Portal area would be great.

Thanks!

There are a lot of good loops out of Whitney Portal, but unfortunately, none of them are easy. A much better plan, if you don't like scrambling, is to head to Whitney from Horseshoe Meadows.

Look at my photo albums if you're interested in seeing what the terrain is like. I've done Meysan to Whitney (in a day, by different routes) twice over the past month. I've done Horseshoe Meadows to Whitney Portal twice. (Once in a day.) I've done a loop down Wallace Creek and around to Whitney via both Russell/Carillon and Suicide Cols a number of times.

Hi, and thanks for your responses!

I'm looking for something as a "dayhike", meaning a trailrun of, say, 25 to 35 miles. I don't really like scrambling over scree, but if it were a short section that helped me connect two trails, then that would be fine.

I only mentioned Meysan Lakes because I've seen the sign for the trailhead when I've been in Whitney Portal.

Richard, I'll check out your pics momentarily.

Fellow trail runner, got any favorites that I really oughta check out?
