I climbed the summit for the first time on Monday the 18th. What a great experience! Anyway, a friend of mine who has climbed it several times said that there was no such thing as a toilet on the summit. Well, I used the darn thing and meant to take a picture to prove it existed, but got so excited about taking pictures of the sights, I ran out of film. Would one of you fellow climbers if you have a picture of the "toilet" up there send me a digital picture please. Or if you're going up soon, please take one and send it to me so that I can win my bet! Thanks for your help.

Whatever happened to the wooden three sided structure that was around the toilet? Maybe someone burned it?
It is surprising how many people don't know the toilet exists, I asked someone where it was last time we summited(I was looking for the wooden structure) and the guy looked at me and smirked "there is no toilet on the summit" I replied "yes there is , I've sat on it", not sure if he believed me or not, but I am sure he thought I was a blithering idiot and was going to ask for the water fountain next.

A few years ago I read the diary of a PCT hiker who talked about a wild event at the summit toilet. While she was camping near Guitar Lake, she heard a huge explosion and yelling from the top of Whitney at about 2:00 in the morning. It seems someone blew up the toilet. Maybe an environmental wacko. Anyway, that would explain the missing walls.

My recollection is that it happened within +/- 2 weeks of when I summited in August '99.
