Thanx for all the great information available on the forum, myself and a friend (whome i met through the forum) successfully day hiked Whitney on Aug 10.
Special thanx to 'Steve C' about information on ease of getting walkin permits, without which i would have waited for another year or maybe i would have never hiked Whitney.
Also thanx to Bob R's excellent data on water along trails.
We drove from Bay area and got the permit on Sun. Started the hike on Mon at 4.30am reached the summit at 12pm and were back to trail head by 8pm. We did the hike slow and steady, kept hydrated and ate at regular intervals to minimize AMS effects, we did nothing else to acclimate due to lack of time. We did take Excedrin. Except for slight headache we did not feel any other AMS effects.

Congrats on your first Whitney summit. I remember mine vividly as it was a pivotal moment for me. Still one of my best hikes ever (Oct. '87).
