My daughter and I (along with her gal pal) completed our second successful summit on August 4. Our first summit was in 2006; 3 years later, a less ambitious training schedule and numerous injuries made this time much more challenging for me. If it weren't for my loving daughter quietly but persistently nudging me along, I think I would have abandoned the hike early on. The NWS really botched their forecast for the day, as it was bitterly cold with howling winds at the top.

The hike itself was rather mundane, with the exception of SAR greeting us at the trailhead at the beginning of the hike (1:00am). They were assembling the rolling gurney to assist someone at Lone Pine Lake. We also ran in to a young man near Trail Crest, on his way down, who was assisting a Michael Popov, who was attempting to set an assisted record of running the JMT in 3 days and 5 hours. We haven't heard if he was successful or not. I'm not sure if I should envy him or offer him a straight jacket!

Anyways, the pain has now subsided and I can now say it was a wonderful day. My love to my daughter, Ashley, my physical therapist who worked so very hard with me and to all of my invisible friends here on this board, who have provided so much useful information in their posts.

Onward and upward!

Congratulations, Dance with Koyotes!

Did you take the Tustin paper to the top with you again?

Maybe you should be nicknamed Dances with Marmots!

Excellent, Kandy!!! Good for you, persevering through some challenges (I can relate to the injuries... whistle ). And you continued on through the cold and strong winds; makes the summit all the sweeter. Congrats to you, your daughter and her friend. cool

Hey, big G! I didn't bring the Tustin paper this time . . . thought I'd give some other citizens a chance. I did bring a sign of thanks to my physical therapist for a photo op (now proudly displayed in his office) and I had to sneak in a Jazzercise logo.

Don't think I've forgotten that YOU are responsible for the Whitney bug. I'll forever be indebted to you and your wonderful words of wisdom!

Still Dancing with Koyotes...

M.C.- thank you! I had to work through MCL issues, a broken shoulder and back trouble . . . all a result of training for this hike! My friends all scratch their heads . . . I think the only ones who understand are fellow hikers like yourself! The reward is the view from the top, the feeling of victory walking (or hobbling) back through the portal and the breathtaking scenery in between. And of course, the camaraderie of everyone on the trail. It is a mental scrapbook of memories that will last a lifetime!

And, as another proud Danu U. alum, I am also grateful for the training encouragement, hiking information, and introduction to this rather addictive mountain!!

BruinDave,

So Danu hooked you too, heh? I never would have seriously contemplated Whitney had it not been for the endless lists and encouragement to hike Mecca West!
