This is my first time camping in bear country so my question will sound simple. I plan on camping at Horseshoe Meadows at 10,000' one night and the Whitney Portal the following night prior to my DAYHIKE attempt of Whitney. 2 part question:

#1 Are there any bear lockers at Horseshoe Meadows campsites?

#2 Is it ever the case that ALL the bear lockers at either Horsheshoe Meadows or Whitney Portal are all taken?

I realize for a dayhike I don't need a bear canister while on the hike.

Thanks,

Amin

There are bear lockers at Horseshoe Meadows.

Sometimes at Horseshoe, the trailhead bear lockers can fill up, but not often. In the past when this is the case, we've just opened up the bear proof trash cans and placed our stuff in there next to the trash cans.

It seems lately that trailhead lockers are becoming popular resupply points for long distance hikers. This long term storage of food cahes takes up lots of space.

Since you'll be camping at Horseshoe you will be in the campsite area and yes there are boxes there. I've never seen Horseshoe wildly packed so there should be no issue. If nothing else, you can always just ask to share with someone. Sharing bear boxes is something most everyone has had to do at some point in time, especially with anything back country related.

Enjoy your summit attempt and good luck!
