Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Changes to permits

I secured permits thru the lottery for 2 nights to climb mt. whitney. The entry & exit trails stated on my reservation receipt state are both for the main whitney trail. However, I would like to return a different route (ie meysan lakes route, mountaineer's route, or maybe thru NAP to horseshoe meadows).

Can I change the permits, am I just stuck, or do they just not care which trail you leave thru?

Any insight would be nice.

I think the entry point is the hard thing to get. When you are at the forest service picking up your permit, tell them you are considering coming out a different trail. I couldn't imagine they would mind if you come out a less travelled trail. The MR would only require carrying your backpack over the top. Meysan lake would be a little harder(no trail)...up over arc's pass and down into Meysan lakes. Near army pass would be interesting....down the sand hill south of Discovery pass, up over crabtree pass and down the Miter basin to NAP. That would be an interesting route but would take longer then 2 days.
