In two weeks I will be going on a trip over Kearsarge Pass to Sixty Lakes Basin/Gardiner Basin. I would like to sleep somewhere near the Onion Valley trailhead the night before starting. Which campground would be a good choice? Would any have space available without reservations on July 26 (Sunday)?
Forty-percent of OV campground is FCFS. That is not very many sites, but it is an option if you arrive early. You can also camp further down the road near Independence (at a lower elevation campground).
