Some photos from a long walk I did yesterday.

I passed by Guitar Lake, Artic Lake and Iceberg Lake on my way back to the Portal from the summit of Mt. Whitney.

Your thread says Muir/Whitney but I didn't see any pictures of Muir? The reason I'm asking is after summiting the easy MWT I'm planning on something a little more exciting like scrambling up Muir's summit block. any recent pictures or beta would be greatly aprreciated.

If you have all day, be sure to get the top of Russell, too.

Don't forget to post your pics.

Great photos. Are any of the Sky Pilots blooming yet in the Whitney switchbacks?
(Might need a little inspiration for my day hike July 7).

Richard:

I never heard of Mt. Morgenson (photos 45 and 46) before. Is that a new name for Peak 13,927 .5 or .6 W of Mt. Russell?

Beautiful photos, the alpine glow photo is top notch. The cables are looking a little better smile

Bob... I don't think the people who "approve" the names ever gave it the go ahead... but the locals call it Morgenson in honor of Ranger Randy Morgenson (the book "THe Last Season" was about him, his disappearance, and the search for him)

SoCalGirl:

Thanks. I found an original Norman Clyde signature in the register on that peak back in 1992. It's a special place. Maybe someone should approach the USGS about making the name official.

Bob, have a look at this thread: http://tinyurl.com/ndegk8 . It will expand on what Chris said.

There is a link in one of Steve C's postings regarding the BGN's rejection of the request for naming the peak.

They are starting to bloom. I don't think they are near their peak yet. It's amazing when you look down the Switchbacks at the perfect time.

Climbing down with only a light daypack was not too bad. I wouldn't want to carry a heavy overnight pack down this. Although I don't like the long switchbacks up the west side, I don't think I would climb directly up, especially if the sun was beating down on me. I just think it would be real uncomfortable.

There was only one short section, where I ended up in a fairly narrow chute, that I would consider beyond class 2. Since it doesn't see a lot of traffic, some of the talus was not stable.

When I mentioned to Betsy that I saw tracks down, both of us agreed that these probably belonged to Rob Pilewski from the Crabtree Ranger Station. Probably his shortcut home.

I don't consider it easy, but I don't know that I take the easiest route up. You might want to have a look at Bob Rockwell's Flickr site to see if he's got a step-by-step for the climb up Muir.

4:18 and loads of fine photos! You are the man.

Let me know when you go for the sub-four. I'd really like to get another one in before it's too late. Chasing you up would probably make it a little easier.

Reading your description of the route makes me a little ticked off at myself for backing off from downclimbing the MR on Friday.

Thing is I didn't realize how close I was to four hrs until I summitted and looked at the time. Next time I will push it and see what I can do.

The wind was blowing pretty hard when I was up there, so I didn't take the time to take any photos of the register.

I'll probably be up there again soon if there's something specific you have in mind.

I've never broken four hours on the Mountaineer's Route, but I've done it twice on the East Face: I have a 3:53 and a 3:29.
