I called Yosemite today and the shuttles from the Valley to High country aren't fully operational. I'll be in the Valley on Sat morning 6/6 looking for a ride up to Olmstead / Tenaya Lake area. Any chance someone will be heading that way?

Hmmm, I am hopeing that they will be operating the following week. We are parking at Tenaya Lake and hiking down into the valley. I was counting on catching a shuttle back to Tenaya. Hopefully they will at least have limited shuttle service.

Good luck getting a ride though.

I spoke with YARTS today and they are running limited shuttles on weekends only. The shuttle from Tenaya to the valley runs at 5pm. Nothing from the Valley to Tenaya area at all. We're planning on trying to hitch hike up to Tenaya / Olmstead. They did say to check back thru out the week and if they had enough requests they could run a shuttle. Lets ALL CALL AND REQUEST A SHUTTLE FOR SATURDAY 6/6.
Hopefully they'll be more operational for you trip. I'll be sure and post TR here so know what to expect.

Has anyone hitch hiked up from Lee Vining to Tuolumne Meadows? We're trying to figure our transport back from Lone Pine (assuming we finish the JMT) in August. Will the YARTS shuttle be running regularly in July do you think?

It's proving rather difficult to coordinate a thru hike from Tenaya lake down into the valley. I'm looking for anyone who will be in the valley on Friday and Saturday 6/5 and 6/6. We need a place to crash out for a few hrs on Friday night ( late ) and we were hoping to catch a ride up to the high country. We're willing to pay for the shuttle ride and to share a campsite for a few hrs. Please respond here or PM me if you can help out.

Thanks in advance...

I can't help with the ride or shuttle, but if you have a wilderness permit you already have a place to pitch a tent in the Valley.

The wilderness permit campground.

When you get a wilderness permit you're entitled to stay the night before and the night after the permit in one of the wilderness permit campgrounds in the park for $5 a night a person.

In the Valley you can park in the wilderness permit/trailhead parking between Curry and Happy Isles, bearproof your car by putting fragrent things in the nearby bearboxes, and hike over to the wilderness permit campground which is across Tenaya Creak from North Pines campground.

Be EXTRA carefull in bearproofing the car!

I have a permit, but not in my possesion. I have to pick it up at the wilderness office. They say we can't stay in the Backpackers camp with out permit in hand. I think thats absurd. I have my permit # and it will be on file. I just can't get into the park to pick it up until Saturday morning. They really are making this alot more difficult than it has to be.

I've been to the Grand Canyon. If you're wondering whether these parks are worth the effort to get to them, let me just say that you're talking about two of the crown jewels of American National Parks. Yes, they are worth the time and effort to get there. Enjoy your trip!

May and June are generally the best times to visit. The crowds start to build up in June but aren’t as bad as July and August. The daytime temperature is usually in the 80’s in June.

The weather was good but Yosemite Falls already appears to be drying out. Flow rate was only about half what I was expecting. Still, the hiking was great. I did the Panorama / Mist Trail from Glacier Point to Happy Isles which offers fantastic views of the valley and the Wapama Fall trail in Hetch Hetchy. Both hikes were very enjoyable although the steep decent down the Mist trail took its toll on my knees. Thank God for trekking poles.

Worth the effort? I got back from Yosemite for the first time on Monday and I now call it the final frontier of the aesthetic voyager!

I ended up only hiking the Mariposa Grove and taking the Four Mile trail to Glacier point then the Panorama to the Mist Trail.

That hike wore me and my dad out enough not to do the Yosemite Falls trail the next day.

I've been to Yosemite many times. It is one of my favorite places on earth. The biggest deterent these days are the crowds. That's why we chose to do a North Rim route as opposed to the standard Half dome / Little Yosemite Valley hike.

My post was directed at shuttle options from the Valley to the high country. I spoke to a ranger today and he indicated that the YARTS shuttle to Mammoth leaves the Valley at 5pm on Sat and Sun. They will drop you anywhere you want between the valley and Mammoth mtn. You only need to pay for a 1 way ticket (approx $20). As far as trying to get up to the high country in the morning, the only option is still to hitch hike. YARTS will begin the Toulmne Hikers bus on 6/12.

The weather this weekend is supposed to pretty wild. We're actually looking forward to challenges it may bring...snow, hail, rain, etc... I'll be sure and post a full TR when we get back.
