It's around six miles each way. The technical difficulty and routefinding are definitely harder than on the main trail, so it isn't for everyone.

I think it is closer to 4.7 miles, one way.

I stand corrected. I heard 6 miles back before the public had access to GPS devices, and never questioned it. In any event, it's the elevation gain, not the mileage, that matters.

Don't let the mileage give you a false sense of security. Years ago I was taking a group of scouts up the Mountaineers route. I told an adult who wanted to go along that it is was only about 5 miles to the top....and he went with us. Afterwards he said he thought that was false advertising....since he was thinking that meant walking five mile down a trail or something.

Out of about 11 people, 3 made it to the top. Two dropped out at the Ebersbacher ledges to "go fishing" 1 scout and 1 leader stopped at Lower Boy Scout Lake. We lost two more adults around Upper Boy Scout Lake and altitude sickness finished off 2 more at Iceberg Lake. 3 persisted all the way to the summit.

It is still a long way to the summit.
