Does anyone know what kind of permits would be needed for a mid October Backpacking trip to Langley?

An overnight permit. I suspect you would backpack into the cottonwood lakes area. You can download the permit at Inyo national forest site - other trails and fax it it.

Go to the Inyo NF website and download an appplication and fax it to them with your credit card # or just come up in October there should be plenty of permits available for walk-ins, they hold back 40% of all permits, save the Main Mt. Whitney Trail.
