I would like to backpack Mammoth Pass with my kids this summer as a bit of a "training" hike. I have hiked the trail from Horseshoe Lake up to Mcleod Lake, but not beyond that. I have looked at the topo's and the trail seems fairly benign from Mammoth Pass down into Reds Meadow and the Devils Postpile area.

Has anyone hiked this particular trail? I'm interested in what the trail looks like. Is it well defined?

Any information is appreciated!

Thanks!!!
Chris

unfortunately that trail from the pass down to Reds is through the forest fire area. Yes, it is gentle, but not all that scenic considering the fire damage. It has recovered enough so that it is no longer black ash underfoot, and there are some weeds and flowers, but mostly burned stumps and partial tree remnants. This info from 8/08 when I went through there.
On the other hand, depending on the age of the kids, if you want a short, easy trail, and then end up "at civilization" for a drink at the Reds Store, and then catch the bus back to Mammoth, then its a good choice. Harvey

Chris,
If you looking for an easy hike with breathtaking scenery, try the Little Lakes/Gem Lakes area out of Mosquito Flats (Rock Creek Lake). It's three miles of fairly flat hiking before you would climb out. The lakes at the south end of the valley are spectacular with some great places to pitch a tent. Harvey is right, the trail from Mammoth Pass to Red's Meadow, while downhill, is still rather haunting.

Thanks Guys for that information... maybe I can be a little more clear on what I'm looking for.

The kids and I are planning on doing the JMT summer 2010 and we're looking for overnight/2 night type backpacking excursions.

I have a couple of other ideas in mind but am intersted in hearing what you all have to say. Anything in SoCal would be awesome too.

Thanks again,
Chris

For a fun 2 day socal hike we once did Devil Slide trail out of Idyllwild, camped (can't remember the camp name) the next day we summited San Jacinto and went down the trail towards Palm Springs where we camped at Round Valley and then hiked out to the tram, of course someone would have to be willing to drop you off/pick you up... we had a friend do this for us, she took the back way to palm springs from Idyllwild and then stayed at a hotel and had a spa vacation while we were camping. It was a fun hike and the miles weren't to bad each day so nothing was too hard while carrying the extra weight of an overnight pack

Thanks! This is an area that I was looking at already, so the extra information is great!

Referring to post #2, and the thread in general, I think the burned out area (over 10 years ago?) and the current level of natural restoration, is a great learning opportunity for kids. Take 'em!!!
