A buddy of mine attempted Tyndall over Xmas, and sent out this trip report. The people trying have summited serious peaks, and are highly experienced in winter alpine conditions:

============================

The plan is to attempt Mt Tyndall via Shepherd pass. The trailhead is located near the town of Independence, CA. This past weekend, our small party of two spent 3 days (Dec 25,26,27) attempting that very same peak. Well, we fell short of our goal for several reasons:

A) we had to park 5 miles from the trailhead. It took over 4 hours of effort just to reach the trailhead.

B) the snow was so deep (2 to 3 feet of fresh powder), progress was difficult and exhausting.

C) the temperatures were so cold (in the low teens). We were in no rush to leave the comfort of the sleeping bags in the morning and wasted valuable time.

Hey Ken,

This is hilarious. Bring back fond memories... I could have told those fools about this forbidden place. I did it exactly three years ago with a group of 5 and made it to Williamson Bowl. Went back over New Year and made it to Symmes Creek Saddle. Getting to the Saddle is probably the worse winter climbing anywhere. Just powder snow for 2,000 feet. The side of the saddle is in the shade most of the time and doesn't like to consolidate. To see your friends suffer the same way you did, it's funny. grin

One of the guys wrote a report on it - http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/170729/christmas-day-in-williamson-bowl.html

When in doubt, go up.

Walked up the Main Trail fairly easily last New Year's Day. Looking forward to seeing how far up we'll make it up the North Fork on Thursday. I'm betting we'll turn left at LBSL and try for Thor.

Wow, the snow level is that low and that deep? That's great! If they parked 5 miles from the trail head, that means they didn't quite make the turn off on Onion Valley road. That's 4.8 miles from the trail head.

It would be great to see some pictures. I was thinking it wasn't going to be worth the drive - especially after seeing Richard's Christmas eve pictures of the portal, but this sounds awesome for some good ski touring.

There was plenty of knee deep snow off of the beaten path and I also managed to find a few waist deep holes to drop in to (above 10,000').

I was thinking of carrying skis up, but I'm glad I didn't. I don't think the coverage is good enough yet.

There is a GREAT snowshoe track up beyond UBSL. (Highest tracks I could see were on the plateau above.) These guys knew what they were doing! (No E-ledges! Yeah!!!!!)

Looking down from the summit of Thor, I couldn't see ANY tracks in the Mirror Lake area at all.
