I know this question has been asked a million times so here is a million and one.

I want to do an overnight hike on MWT on Oct 22,23rd. I'm flying into Ontario on the 21st and want to drive up and sleep at the portal that evening. I'm guessing I won't get there until 10:00pm that evening.

My question; is there anyway to get an overnight permit without having to drive back down to Lone Pine to pick-up the permit on the 22nd? If not no biggie but it would be great to start early in the morning. Thanks

CMACH,

To answer your question you will need to return to Lone Pine to get a permit. However there is another way to do this.

I just looked at the permit availability on line here and there is plenty of overnight space available. You should be able to call the permit office at (760) 873-2483 and reserve space. Where you might run into issues is activating the permit but you can talk to them about that and see if there's a way to take care of that.

From the link Kurt gave you, overnights are available for the asking. If you call and pay the $15 reservation fee, they should then be willing to leave it in the overnight box so you don't need to return.

Call the number and ask.
