For 23 years of so I have been coming to the Portal each year after the Labor Day crowds are gone. I came for many years with my dad, and when he passed away, continued the tradition with my son, Charlie. I once found a body in Lone Pine Lake (so long ago we didn't have cell phones and the store had a "radio phone"). This weekend Charlie and I will be back again. Get our pancake ready!! See you all tomorrow!

There really isn't that much to tell. Back when Doug, Doug, and Earlene started taking over things at the Portal, before the present building was there, I decided to hike up to Lone Pine lake for some fishing, hoping to snag a big one (but not as big as I got!). I saw what I thought was a blue tarp at the bottom of the lake. I didn't want to leave it there so I tried to snag it with my fishing line. The more I looked at it, the less it looked like a twisted up tarp. I soon realized it was a male adult body in blue jeans and nothing else. The skin was the same color as the jeans. I never made it down that trail that fast before or since! Earlene was behind the counter and I told her there was a body in Lone Pine Lake. Due to my state of mind I wasn't that coherent and she didn't understand what I was saying, but eventually she got on the radio phone (no cells at that time) and got assistance. I was later told they found a pair of boots on the shore with a suicide note in it. I try not to fish for anything thats blue now.
