Myself and six others all got to at least Trail Camp over the 3 days and 4 reached the summit on Saturday.
Weather was fantastic all 3 days. We were blessed.
There were some icy sections near the cables and on the ridge after Trail Crest, but by taking our time and watching our steps, as everyone should anyways along the whole route, we all made it as far as each of us were capable of going.
This was the 3rd attempt to reach the summit in five (5) years for my wife and I. In 2003, we were turned back at Trail Camp due to medical reasons. In 2006 we reached Trail Crest, but all the way we continually faced 60-70 mph very cold winds blowing from the NW and turned back for safety reasons.
3rd time this past weekend was a charm, a great trip to the Summmit!

Thankyou! The weekend really could not have been sweeter. Making hte summit made relaxing and having the hamburger at the portal very satisfying after coming down from Trail Cammp!
There was a gentleman camped next to us on Saturday that got altitude sickness getting to trail camp on Saturday and went down to the portal earlier than us on Sunday.
Another guy we talked to on the way to the summit had made it to the summit last year, but got as far as trail crest this year before stopping since he wasn't feeling good enough to continue.
So we were happy we put a lot of dayhiking and overnighting in this spring and summer to get ready, and felt fortunate and blessed that we had great conditions and, as a result, made it all the way up and down very smoothly.

Thanks. I think I still have a bit of the Sierra Mountain High from the trip.
This is interesting, I found a string in the "What Can Go Wrong on Witney" forum that refers to the weekend of our trip in 2006 (September) when the winds were really strong and we turned back at Trail Crest. High wind dangers.

Thanks lido 14! I really enjoy photography; it's become kind of a side business (more excuses to climb mtns and travel)! I just purchased the Panasonic TZ5 Lumix. It has a 10x optical zoom which I look forward to using and it is fairly compact/lightweight.

It is always grteat to have good weather.
I am going to hike it Monday September 22. I like to go it in trail running shoes, but I am concerded about the icy. Are hiking pulls or more serious hiking boots needed, or can you work your way around the icy without going through it?

Hope your trip went well, sorry I had not checked my messages until today, after your trip. What did you decide and experience on Monday? When I went up, people were wearing a full range of footwear and seemed to get around, through, on or over the icey areas just fine.
