Can someone give me directions to the trailhead and the lowdown on how long the hike is and what it like? We will be arriving in Lone Pine Sunday morning for our Whitney summit attempt on Tuesday and thought perhaps this might be a good hike to stretch our legs and get some altitude. We would like to avoid Horseshoe Meadows and White Mountain. If you have any other ideas, that would be great appreciately. Thanks all . . . onward and upward!

Are you talking about the Robinson Lake out of Onion Valley? It's a pretty hike that normally doesn't get too much traffic. If you're looking to get higher than that I'd suggest going up to Kearsarge Pass instead. It's a good trail and the view from there is awesome.

Kurt,
Yes, that's the one. We want to get some altitude without over doing it. We were considering the Little Lakes area out of Rock Creek, but would rather find something closer.
BTW - congrats on your successful summit of Everest this year. You and Moosetracks/Laura live the life that most of us can only dream of. I am cramming as much as possible into my week in the Sierras next week.

Hiya, Kandy! Yes, the Robinson Lake trail is very pretty, but very short. If you are looking for better acclimation I agree with Kurt and head for Kearsarge Pass. If you feel like driving up this 'far' I would also recommend the Bishop Pass trail out of South Lake or Piute Pass out of North Lake for acclimation. Both are also spectacular (along the way and the views from the passes) and not uber-strenuous.

But why are you 'avoiding' HM and White? Too many people? Already BTDT?

Laura,
Thanks for the additional suggestions. We were just trying to think of someplace different, as it seems like everyone heads to Horseshoe or WM the day before the big hike. Since we are going to be in Mammoth the remainder of the week, we might try White Mountain on Sunday (I understand the gate will be open?)
Hope to meet y'all on the trail someday - those mountains are a beautiful place to be!

If you're hiking to Robinson Lake, you might as well climb Independence Peak while you're there...

Well, I think that's the Sunday of Labor Day weekend: is that the week you'll be around? Yes, definitely try to go up White if you have the chance. It's amazingly different from anything you'll ever see, and the views to both the west and the east are spectacular! You could also pay your $7 and do some hiking around the Devils Postpile area. The hike from Agnew Meadows to the valley below Ritter and Banner is about 7-8 miles one way and not too strenuous, and GORGEOUS!

Yes, we will be in the area through Labor Day. The hike to Thousand Island Lake is one of our favorites - last year, we took the JMT up and the river trail back down. I loved your post, Laura, of your hike to Ritter. The pics were spectacular. Looks like the weather will be perfect next week and am looking forward to the smell of pines and Sierra dirt under my feet!

I'd agree with Kurt. Kearsarge Pass is a fairly easy trip with unworldly views at the pass. Robinson Lake is a nice trip but it doesn't compare to Kearsarge Pass.

If you don't mind a touch of Class 3 at the very top, Mt. Gould is there for the taking...just bring the scree gaiters.
