Hi,

I've lurked around here for awhile and finally signed up.

I thought I would let people know our group just cancelled 2 spots for an 8/10 day hike on the MT.

I'll put up some pics and trip report when we return. Day hike isn't my first choice, but what the heck it is a challenge and something different to try.

There is nothing wrong with doing a day hike if you (and the members of your group) are well trained. See my notes in Determine whether to day hike or stay overnight.

No, I didn't mean to say anything is wrong w/ day hiking it, just that I'm not a summit fever type person - I just enjoy being out there. So, my first choice would be a 3-4 day trip and if that includes getting to the top of something great but if it is just spending a few days in pretty country and exploring around that's perfectly fine too.

I'm seeing the day trip as much more of a physical/mental challenge than a leisurely time enjoying the outdoors with friends. Both have merits, but I tend to prefer the latter.

(I get plenty of the challenge stuff from being a cyclist!)

Edit - we're trained, but I guess won't really know until we try just how well is well, right?

You can ask if there are any extra overnight permits available for any of the area trailheads (including the main trail) when you arrive at the Visitors Center in Lone Pine. It costs you nothing to ask, and you may be happier as a result.

Right. Any number of things can happen, but your odds appear to be pretty good.

Thanks, unfortunately only 2 of our group of 4 have the gear and experience for an overnighter.

So, we'll go this year as the day trip and look towards the future to do a multi-day.

I've been itching to go out to 1K Island Lake and spend some time out there.
