Well, my annual summer hiking trip is over. I arrived in Lone Pine on the afternoon of 21 July, and I'm departing this morning. I didn't get to all the peaks on my list, but I did climb Trail Peak, Independence Peak, Dragon Peak, Mt. Gould, Mt. Mallory, Trailmaster, Peak 12525, Lone Pine Peak, Peak 12369, Mt. Langley, Mt. Whitney, Mt. Muir, Discovery Pinnacle, and Wotan’s Throne - and I learned a lot. The only peak where I encountered other humans was Mt. Langley. Oh, and that big one that starts with "W."

My wife is a former school teacher and is obsessed with corecting language and spelling errors especially in places where there should be no excuses for it. You would be surprized at how many people wrongly place an apostrophe before a pleural S instead of using the apostrophe to show posession. You see the wrong use of apostrophe everywhere including in newspapers, magazines, Billboards, TV. It drives her crazy. As far as to the reason behind Wotens Throne not using an apostrophe your guess is as good as anyones.

Don't let your wifey see this post - Woten will get you one knuckle crack with the ruler.

I think your wife and I would get along, although my specialty is commas rather than apostrophes. I sometimes have fancied that my next book should be "1001 Misplaced or Missing Commas".

One of the most egregious and common misuses of the apostrophe is found in signs attached to homes. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, proclaim their residence with "The Smith's" when it should be "The Smiths". Down the block you see a worse case: "The Douglass's" for "The Douglasses".

I hope you don't mind my wondering, given your own interesting spelling habits, whether you might not have found more happiness in marrying, instead of a stickler for precision, a descendant of Mrs. Malaprop?

Yes kkeating I have expossed my weakness for spelling especially with double consonants. I would be OK if they let us spell phonetically.

Oops - actually, I knew that about Wotans Throne. My excuse is that I was in a hurry to post something before my flight. And Bob, maybe I'll be back out in December, to do the OTHTC 50K... Oh, and I'll post pictures if I find I've taken some worthy ones.

Here are my pictures from 31 July, when I climbed Mt. Whitney, Mt. Muir, Discovery Pinnacle and Wotans Throne. I didn't take any pictures from Muir, because I had left my camera in my pack, down near the trail.

OK, I've finished posting all the pictures from my recent trip. Why so many photos this time? My daughter gave me the camera for Father's Day.

That was a perfect day indeed... And actually, in all my hikes from 21 July through 31 July, I never had to put on a second layer of clothing - I did every hike in just shorts and a tee shirt.
