Hey all!

My first visit to the board this year.. I'm wondering if anyone is making a day trip up the MR in late Aug or early Sept and has an open spot - or wants to make the hike. Wasn't really planning on a summit visit this year, but feeling the itch....

FYI - I have been up the route and back down (about 11 - 14 hrs depending on the company..) the last two years in a row and know the route pretty well.

If I can't find a small group going I'll probably find a partner and take a chance on the day permits.

On a side note.. gonna take a look at the top of Dana next weekend.. I hear the hike doesn't do the views justice.. We shall see. Maybe I'll throw in Half Dome for good measure on Sunday - nothing like 1/2 Dome traffic....

Thanks all - have a great day!

Rich

Mt Dana is a short, fairly steep, summit has beautiful views and wild flowers in Dana meadows are awesome late summer. I will be day hiking on 9/3/08 and may have an extra permit. My hiking partner may opt for a shorter hike in the portal area and would gladly give his permit to someone that will use it. Let me know if that date works and I will get an answer from him.

Thank you for the offer. Let me know if it becomes available and I'll make the decision immediately. I can be reached by email at carrpaydiem1@comcast.net

I would prefer a Saturday Permit, however weekdays are a possibility. Thanks again.

Hello all - Looks like Dana on Sept 6th now. Delays...
Anyone have an available MR day hike permit for Sept 13th/14th? Can we use a MT day hike permit for the MR now?

Rich,
I too am looking for some company up the MR late Aug.-early Sept.
I have never been up Whitney...I normally pack with a few friends that can't seem to get away, and frankly, I am the altitude junky of the bunch! Would love your company as you know the trail. My dates are flex because I am a commercial electrician in the middle of remodels at the moment! Name the day!!Lemme know, u can reach me at dwightheim@att.net
Thanks!

MR wilderness permits are no longer unlimited. The overnight quota is 10 per day, ( 6 reservable, 4 available day before for walk-ins).

MR day hikes are now part of the Whitney Main Trail quota, 100 per day.

Thank you for the effort Zombie.

Anyone - If one becomes available in your group email me at carrpaydiem1@comcast.net

Joe / Dwight, lets keep in touch, maybe we can pull a trip together. Its a fun route with a little variation here and there to keep it interesting..

Steve, I assume that means that the MR & MT day hike permits are the same? Anyone know how many are available day to day (approximately) and what time I need to be at the center the day before?

Have a great day.

Yes.

> Anyone know how many are available day to day (approximately)

Check the far right column here:  Unused Whitney Permits - 2008.  After giving out the no-shows, they show only one or two available Fri/Sat/Sun, but easy to get mid-week. I am sure there are many no-shows available starting at the 2 PM time. The Unused page numbers are what is left after all available are given out to those walking in and asking.

> and what time I need to be at the center the day before?

(This info is available in the Wilderness Permit Options link above on the left in the Feature Topics box:)  For a Mount Whitney Zone (main trail or North Fork/MR) day hike permit, show up at the Visitors Center by 11 am the day BEFORE your entry date.  Any cancellations that have not been re-reserved will become available then.  If unsuccessful, report back to the Visitors Center by 2 pm that afternoon.  No-shows for the next day become available at 2 pm.
