Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Campsites near North Lake/South Lake

In August I will be doing a loop from North Lake to South Lake. I hope to be reasonably acclimated since the previous week I will be doing another trip in Sequoia. But I would like to make sure some others in my group get a little acclimated by sleeping as high as possible near the North Lake trailhead the night before. Can anyone recommend places to camp in that area that have a reasonable chance of having available space? Thanks.

Four Jeffrey (USFS campground) is about half way in between your two trailheads and takes reservations. At about 8100' it should get you high enough. There are others in the area but this one has over 100 sites and is one of the only ones to take the pre booking. Take 168 out of Bishop (West Line) to the split going to either South Lake or North Lake /Lake Sabrina. Head left toward South Lake and it will be on your left a mile or two up the road.

There is also a great small campground at the trailhead by North Lake.It might be tough to get a space but worth the effort.Four Jeffrey on the South Fork is the other best bet.If you reserve a space there try to get on along the creek,that's where the shade is.
