 Overshadowed by nearby peaks like Mount Whitney some of the more remote peaks obviously see far less activity. Such is the case with Chamberlin, Newcomb, Pickering, and Joe Devel. Since I still needed to tag all 4 I figured I might as well get them all in one dayhike. This may have been my hardest dayhike so far this year. I traversed all 4 peaks using the connecting ridges (tedious). Total distance was 36.4 miles via Cottonwood Pass. I started late (8am) knowing full well it would likely be midnight at the earliest by the time I returned. The return took a little more time than expected (got a little lost for awhile in the dark). It was 1:47am when I finally got back to the Cottonwood Pass trailhead. No dinner. Had a 3 hour drive back to Bakersfield and had to be at work at 8am. Got in a little late. Total time on the trail was a little under 18 hours. Anyway ... not a whole lot to report ... just a very strenuous day. The class 2/3 ridges between the peaks were more tedious than I expected, sometimes fun, but mostly just time consuming. Clouds during the afternoon helped keep things cool but didn't make for the greatest photos. None-the-less, here's a link if anyone's interested: Chamberlin, Newcomb, Pickering, Joe Devel - 7/6/08

Rick...amazing! Sounds like a grueling trip!  I have been inspired by many on this forum (they know who they are). That being said, I read all of your TR's and just cannot believe what you are able to accomplish. You are truly one of my "heroes"! Inspire On!!! MC

Totally awesome, Rick!
I was intrigued by your comment about the 40 minutes in your life you would rather not have had. You attributed the experience to "ridiculously poor GPS data." Was this bad map data on your Legend?

Another challenge met, Rick. As you well know, I love challenges--even though mine are lesser these days--and I don't always meet them. But I always have a good time!
Reminds me when Carl Heller, Fred Camphausen, and I did the same four peaks on 25 July 1975. (We had just returned from a traverse up Thunderbolt, over Starlight, to North Palisade and down.) But we didn't immediately return to our car. We bivouacked at Upper Crabtree Lake, and on the 26th did Hitchcock, Discovery Pinnacle, Muir, Day, Keeler, Whitney, and Keeler again, before dropping to the Portal. No burgers in those days.
I'm in a reminiscing mood, so I'll mention that the next weekend the three of us climbed Whitney on successive days, and Mt. Keith the following weekend. Twelve days after that it was Mts. Jeffery, Waddington, Spearman and Munday. New route on Munday, and that was a thrill.
Ah, those were the days.

Rickers, that's just awesome. What a fun day of scrambling around and exploring! I loved the shots during the traverse at golden hour, and the sun setting as you descended. Nice angles of Langley and the Comb Ridge from there. Definitely made me want to try for Mt. Guyot in the near future so I can look into the Kern Canyon again! -L

Do any of those require class 5 climbing? No. Corcoran has a little 4th class; We took a rope but didn't use it.
