If anyone needs permits for this Sunday, I am going to have extra. We planned on a larger group but with cancellations we'll have at least 5 extra. let me know if you need them and we can coordinate how to get them to you in Lone Pine Saturday afternoon. We are planning on a 4/4:30 departure from the Trailhead/Portal on Sunday AM if anyone wants to join up with our group.

TomT, please read this:
Whitney Trail Permits: Buying, selling or transferring

This board is not a clearing house for unused permits. Please do the right thing -- call the permit office and release your unusable permits right away. Then the others can call in and reserve one of those permits.

Otherwise, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for everyone you give a permit!

There will be plenty of no-show permits available for those guys who want them, so you do not need to get yourself into trouble with the Forest Service.

On Thursday morning the 19th the FS web site said there were 3 unreserved dayhike spaces for Mt. Whitney the following day (yesterday). My friend and I picked up our 2 just before they closed. I asked, how many did they have then, after the no-shows and after our 2?--The answer was 70.

I am all for following rules. I do have some questions:

1. What is the rationale for why the permits are non-transferable considering how far in advance the reservations need to be made?

2. Has any "leader" of a group been ticketed for actions by someone else in his group.

Just wondering....

Kevin,

Regarding 1., I was told that the FS wants everyone out there to have an equal chance at getting a permit slot that becomes available. When the permit holder opens it up to any special group, like the WPSMB, a lot of people are left out.

Regarding 2., I have never heard of anyone getting ticketed for anything. I'm sure it happens (bear canister offenses come to mine), but it's probably pretty infrequent.

Also for #1: If they were transferable, you might see some auctioning of permits to highest bidder.

Like the auctions on eBay for camp sites in Yosemite Valley.
