Are all backpacking sleeping bags compatible with a compression sack? If not, how does one know whether a compression sack is compatible or not?

I was at REI the other day looking at sleeping bags and talking with the sales person. His answers were vague and not so convincing, so I thought I would ask the board members the question.

If it can be smooshed, it's compatible with a compression sack. However, synthetic stuff doesn't bounce back from being stuffed as well as down. I don't use a compression sack on my synth bag because it's already getting lumpy. I use them all the time with my down bags.

Agreed.

Also, I am assuming you are looking for a compression sack for an existing bag, but just in case thought I would thrown in the tidbit that all new bags (as far as I have seen in the past 5 we purchased) all come with their own compression sacks.

I always use a compression sack with my down bags. The -10d bag won't fit otherwise.
But do not store them in the bags. But be sure and take 'em out as soon as you get back and let them expand to their natural fill.

Paul, I'm not sure what you mean by "compatible"?

I do think that it is risky to mix certain shades of pastels together, but I'm sure that is a matter of opinion. cool

From the response, it sounds like most; if not all synthetic bags are not good candidates for use with a compression sack. Having said this, when I bought my REI synthetic bag 3 years ago, it came with a compression sack. I have been using it every year since.

I find it interesting that most sleeping bags either synthetic or down don't come with a compression sack, but, boy there is a whole section devoted to them at REI and not much help.

Ken, I was thinking that "compatible" means without destroying the bag.

Thanks, Paul. Yep, the thread that Bob posted did address much of this.

However, I would say that synthetics benefit MOST from the compression sacks, as they are hard to compress, to start with.
Their lack of compressability is one of the down sides of synthetics.

Thanks Ken..... I thought Bob had addressed the compressions sack issue that time ago, but my multiple searches turned up nothing so I turned to the board for help and, as usual, everyone was helpful. I suspect it all had to do with the search words.

Thanks to all

paul
