Dear Swifty, We've camped in #4, #8, #14 & #43. 43 was DEFINATELY the best one. This site is not located in the main loops of the campground. It's in a small section ( I think there are only 5 sites total) which is accessed by 1 turn off before the main turn off. These sites are on the outer peremeter of the campground but next to the stream. They are quite roomy with no feeling of camping on top of the party near by. Number 44 might even be better( It's really huge & FLAT) but the bear locker is still the small one that all the sites used to have. The bigger boxes hold 3 coolers plus all the stuff that 2 car camping famlies can manage to haul. BELIEVE that you need the bear boxes. We were visited every night by a bear and even found muddy prints on top of the picnic table. A curious bear even broke the globe to our lantern, ripped off the door of a car in the main loop section, and I even met one on my way to the John. Another Note. Since only 5 sites were using the John it remained very clean.
The new Johns are great----cast in cement in ONE PIECE---hauled up on a flat bed & lifed into place by a crane. The double John up in the main loop weighs 20 tons. Was this more info than you needed? PS. It's a good idea to reserve your site ahead of time during the Summer season, and all the sites may be booked by now. Even so, This is a wonderful, magical place and I hope you have a good time.

Swifty,

My favorite spot is 14. 15 and 16 are nice spots too. 16 doesn't have a whole lot of room though. I've stayed at 14 for the last couple of years in Sept. Last year we had 3 tents set up at the site.

Each one of these sites is right by the stream that runs through camp. There's nothing like the sound of a creek putting you to sleep.

One more thing, each spot I identified has plenty of shade.

We've stayed at the Portal a number of times, and our favorite is #44. It's at the end of the road with only #43 (also nice) next to it, so it's really quiet with no traffic. It's next to the river and surrounded by trees... just beautiful!

Susan B & Rosabella, thanks a bunch for the beta. I hope all the info you've shared is applicable to "walk ins." Quite frankly, I'm burnt out with the whole Reserve USA process. I just hate to be a naysayer, so I won't go into my experiences with them, but let's just say I'm going to try the walk in method and hope for the best. Thanks again...I always look forward to your comments on this board...

I have campsite #7 for Friday, 8/15. Any insight about this site would be great. Thanks
