I have enjoyed the many photog diaries of Whitney on this site. The accompanying link has an interactive (complete with sound) webpage about another "photographer" and lover of the outdoors.
Try his autobiography. It's a great read! I will never be the photographer he was, but I'm sure I admire the Sierras as he did. He had a rare and fortunate opportunity to spend a great amounts of time in the mountains.
