Not to step on any local SAR teams toes, but speaking of the Baldy hike, and for all of you who train for Mt. Whitney by hiking Baldy, Ontario, Cucamonga, etc:

Just thought y'all might like to know:

If you hike anywhere in the areas between Mt. Baldy and Lytle Creek, you might want to consider supporting the SAR team that's responsible for that area and for providing you with assistance should you or anyone in your party need it - West Valley Search and Rescue (www.westvalleysar.org).

Like the ~30 other SAR teams in San Bernardino County, WVSAR is a team composed strictly of volunteers, and is incorporated as a charitable "501(c)(3)" organization. (That means your contributions are tax deductible, if that helps.) The team receives minimal support from the county, and depends on fundraisers, donations, and grants (when they can get them), to support the purchase of equipment, medical supplies, and training.

SAR teams throughout the state and country all use different methods to raise funds. West Valley holds a 5K/10K run/walk. This will be their 12th annual event.

The run is in Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday, April 26th.

If you are a runner, it's a nice course. Unlike most, it actually has some ups and downs to it. It's USATF sanctioned. But, don't feel you have to be a runner to contribute. Trust me - they will gratefully accept any donation large or small and will put it to very good use.

See the "Run for Rescue" links on their website for a flyer, or you can register on-line via the link to "active.com".

A note: WVSAR has been trying to raise funds to purchase a new equipment truck for the last couple years - before it dies completely (see pic in the "Search and Rescue in Action" page on the web site). There is very little likelyhood that the county will provide them with another one when that one goes. They can definitely use your encouragement and support!

Just fyi...

Thanks to everyone who turned out and supported West Valley Search and Rescue at their fundraiser on Saturday. (Or, made a donation, or contributed support in any other way.)

Apparently they had ~200 runners pre-registered for the 10K and 5K races!! That's not counting walk-ups, of course.

Fantastic! Of course, the money raised will be spent by the team on technical gear (ropes, webbing), medical supplies (for WMT members and medical packs), equipment (such as AZV, biners, winter equipment, vehicle improvements), and training - to mention just a few things.

Thanks again!

Inyo SAR will have a booth at the Choo-Choo Swap Meet (benefitting Law Railroad Museum) tomorrow morning. Great chance to meet the folks and support the team!
