Hi Doug,

I have a few photos of several different bears in Sequoia NP if that would help, many from the last year or so. Let me know I can send them to you or post them.

Rob

I think Doug is looking specifically for bears from Whitney Portal.

Seems like someone posted a picture or two last summer. Just not sure where.

Hi Rick where's the bear? Looks like it took a bite out of Tom's wrecked up bear proof trash can and lost a tooth.

The trash can that is taped shut was the target for many nights last summer, the large bear would get on top the can and remove the trash and bent the lid so it would not stay closed.

Also we found that three of this type of can was warped so the rear door would not lock and the bears were lifting the rear lid and pulling the trash out, the large bear was hitting the can back and forth until it would spring open, then pull the can and concrete pad over. I know several people watched this at the trailhead location and in the campground. The cans were replaced and that moved the bears into the next level of supply, cars with food stored inside.

For several weeks last summer bears would come to the pond around sundown and catch fish , which reminded me Cherida has some photos of the bears .

Thanks again for the photos. Doug

Doug, probably not the picture you're looking for, but it does resolve the age-old controversy ---

Warning: Don't do a google IMAGE search for "bear attack photo". Very disturbing stuff.

Nope. That bear only ate berries and salmon.

I got that email years ago, too. There are a number of refs in Google:
Snopes.com: Urban Legends Reference: Bear Hunt
www.museumofhoaxes: Giant Bear

Getting back on track:   I'll bet Doug is still hoping to see some more Portal bear pictures.

Steve, I heard that this was part-urban myth? I am curious though. Have you heard anything like this?

The guy apparently did bag a big bear, but the pic showing the poor guy's leg was allegedly a from a tiger attack in India (looks like there are palm fronds in the foreground)?

Yes. That is the point I was trying to make. It is not exactly a "myth". The pictures are real, but the message going around with them was bogus.

From last October. http://www.climbmtwhitney.com/photos.html

Mom and Cub. The standoff lasted about 45 minutes overall. When they were really close we were not thinking about grabbing a camera.

I know those bears intimately. The cub woke me up with the sound that resembled a pig snorting. I went out of my tent to find him fleeing the charmin I had packed in my backpack. He returned later to try out someone else's trail mix, with Mom at his side for protection.

That was last October. By now the bear has a long criminal rap sheet and a record of Charmin attacks.
