A few freinds and myself are planning a march ski trip up the north fork on whitney
and one of the guys swears there is a binding converter to make alpine ski bindings into AT bindings something that you pop in for the acsent and pop out to alpine down anyone ever heard of such a thing.

I haven't used them, but I did consider buying them before I found a bunch of good deals on my AT gear.

I'd watch the TRs leading up to your trip. If there's a boot track, I'd just carry the skis and boots up and ski down. (I find it easier to walk then to skin, even with the extra weight on my back.) Of course, if people are having to snowshoe in, you'd be in a bad situation if you couldn't skin up.

Kurt Wedberg was using them on one of this group's Baldy trail snow trips during one of his A16 tours. He was able to ski almost to the parking lot. But then, he was on old rental skis. I took my skis off for the lower rocky parts.

I haven't used the Alpine Trekkers, personally, but I did research them in some depth about 8 years ago, and talked to quite a few people who had. The biggest complaint was that they were quite heavy, and that climbing in alpine boots wasn't made a whole lot more comfortable.

I have some Ramer bindings on my backcountry skis which are circa 1981. They have a heal that you can turn around which provides about a three inch lift so that when skinning up a steep slope, your foot when "flat" to the ski is actually close to a level platform.

I have not used these skis in over a decade, a Mammoth season pass and children tend to keep me from back country skiing. I use my Koflack Ultra's in the bindings. I used this set up downhill skiing as well as back country in the early to mid 80's. That was back country skiing in Maine and New Hampshire. The skis are very old downhill skis but they worked fine in the hills of New England. I also used them on Gorgonio when I first moved here in late 80's and early 90's
