Tourbillon, that's the best post yet in this thread. grin

One question: I didn't know about the hiring a driver part. How available is this, and what sort of cost would you expect out of Las Vegas?

"A 2 MPH pace will get you through the whole thing in < 24 hours."

That's true. While it's possible to do a Rim to Rim to Rim in less than 24 hours w/o running, few people do it this way. Usually they run through the Box because that's fairly level and even terrain. Invariably some running is thrown into the mix.

When I've done the Rim to Rim to Rim in one day, I start at the North Rim and run only down to the first bridge, the rest of the way I hike. Time is about 8 hours to the South Rim. I eat something and rest a little at the top of the South Rim and then jog from the South Rim to Indian Gardens, then hike the remainder. Time going back is 10 hours. I add in 2 hours fooling around at the South Rim between hikes. Total time of apprx. 20 hours.

Doing the Rim to Rim to Rim and breaking it up over 2 days is much more enjoyable and less hectic. A truly outstanding hike!

I'm planning a Rim to Rim hike this year as well. Does anybody know about other message boards / forums than this one that would be good places to look for more info?

I was going to do the rim-to-rim once but learned that the bus ride back was going to be long and kind of expensive (for me at the time). A sleeping bag, bivy sack, pad, food, a few other items isn't that heavy.

At the time there was a walk-in campground on the north side that required no reservation (for hikers and bikers). Is this still the case?

I havn't done it as much as candace only 14 times. we start at the south rim on Saturday stay north sat. night come back sunday.
I prefur to be done with the whole thing on the side where you walk to your room. I always get a ride to the north rim lodge in a few minutes so the distance is not a problem. The north rim is also more out of the way for car access.

Last year it was brutal on Labor day, 106 at the 3 mile rest house. I still made it in 10 hours (nto south) but it wasn't easy.
