Mammoth got significant snow (20inches) and Los Angeles has snow down to about 6000 feet in the local mountains. Anyone been up the Whitney Portal road since the storm. How much snow is on the road?

It turns out starting from the bottom of the hill.....takes some of the fun out of being there.

Damn, that was a fun year. We luckily got as far as the first switchback after the wink, wink, nod, nod road closure sign in February.

The LA times article this morning reported 4-6 inches at 6400 Mountain High Ski resort and up to one foot in the 7000 foot Big Bear area of Los Angeles.

The Yosemite Web cam shows some snow on and around Half Dome, perhaps down to about 5500 feet.

It seems like the Whitney Portal road would have snow down to somewhere around Lone Pine Campground. Hopefully someone will be in the area before long.

Giga Mike posted this pictures from Saturday Dec 8th up on Mt. Baldy, near Los Angeles. Certainly it convinces me winter is finally here.

http://www.digitalalpine.com/Albums/Baldy12.8.07/album/index.html

"Bruno, Adam and I took a trip up Mt. Baldy on Saturday. We rode the Ski lift to the notch and ascended across the backbone. Snow levels were 4-12" with a few knee deep drifts. The route had tons of ice everywhere and the summit was completely covered. Temperatures were around 15-20 degrees all day, snowed on & off and the winds never let up. It was a great day on the mountain"

What a difference a few miles makes. I was up Icehouse Canyon Saturday. The temperature was 28 to 32* F and no wind the whole morning. Just 3-4" of snow at the saddle.

You are a braver person than me going up Mt. Baldy Rd. beyond Icehouse. It was a sheet of ice at 7 AM.
