My friend Bill and I headed up the Whitney trail, to check on conditions and see how far we could get. In the back of our minds was Wotans Throne, but the conditions (and the desire to get back for burgers and beers) didn't allow it. Snow on the ground started below Lone Pine Lake, and reached depths of 6 to 12 inches at Trail Camp, with drifts up to 2 or 3 feet in a few places.

Pictures are here.

Bob,

Thanks as always for letting the rest of us know the conditions as they are!

Should you be back up there anytime this coming week before Thursday, please post conditions again, and if you can post a picture of the view of the White Mountains. I will be doing both next weekend, White Friday, Whitney early Sunday morning and want to be as prepared as possible.

You are a great source of information for the rest of us working stiffs grinding it out down south.

Hope to meet you on the trial sometime soon.

Thanks for posting. Great shots! Loved #24 snowballs and #63 Pretty. Autumn sure came and went in a Sierra heartbeat.

Thanks for the pics. You're a great source of a lot helpful tips and info, especially for us newbies in the Mt. Whitney hiking. It reminds me a lot of the conditions on my first attempt to Whitney last Oct 12, last year...See photos below:

We will try again this Thursday 9/27th but this time we will day hike and start around 1 am...Hopefully, conditions will improve by then.

I was up on the other side of Thor at the same time. I only got to see the summit for a breif instant before the clouds closed in again.

Regarding the abandoned pack: I passed a Ranger on my way up to the North Fork Junction and asked him where he was headed in such rotten weather. He mentioned that the FS had received reports of the abandoned pack and was heading up to retrieve it. When I questioned whether he was on a recovery mission (meaning just the pack), he said he hoped not. I guess he thought I was asking if there was an injured person involved.

We were to start up the trail to Whitney about the same time as the two of you. We were headed for Consultation Lake for the night. The weather talked us out of it. Those thunderstorms Thursday night were incredible! We must have walked by each other in the parking lot at the Portal!

Thanks for sharing the fabulous pictures. It was nearly as good as being there. We'll look for you on the trail...

Best,

Fielden
