Silly question but...I always keep a quart of motor oil in my car just in case...Is motor oil considered a no-no left in one's vehicle at the Portal trailhead? Thanks for all responses! Susan.

I do as well. I just keep it in the trunk - out of sight. Never had a problem, nor heard of a problem, with a can of oil attracting bears.

I have always kept a quart in my car as well. I've never had an issue in 25+ years of parking at any trailhead. It's in the trunk out of sight.

The Inyo National Forest's web site has a great site and it includes all their bear regulations and tips. This is the web site address: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/regssafety.shtml

Thank you both for the info! Kurt-I attended your Whitney Part II lecture at A16 in Costa Mesa earlier this year and will be on my way Monday morning. I'll be at Portal Campground tomorrow night, then on my way up (hopefully) and down through Friday. Thanks to you and everyone here at WPSMB for all the help!
