I'm excited...I'm making my first proper trip to the Eastern Sierra next month. I'm going to be renting an SUV and camping / sleeping in it most nights. So I'm trying to find some good areas where I can park and camp if the "proper" campgrounds are full.

I prefer to stay at the campgrounds like Horseshoe Meadows or the Portal or Rock Creek because of the high elevation, but I know that August is "prime time" and they may be full most nights...

Free places to just park and sleep are fine too even if they aren't regular campgrounds. Any suggestions/ideas are appreciated...thanks!

See the thread Deciding where to stay for more information on the subject. You should be fine up at Horseshoe Meadow.
