Sunday started out with beautiful weather. I got an early start on the Meysan Lake Trail which begins at the family campground below Whitney Portal. At Camp Lake I ascended directly to the north ridge of Mt Irvine. This is an enjoyable class 3 climb which offers many different route possibilities. Really nice views of the Whitney Main Trail. After summiting Irvine I headed across the bowl to get up Mallory. It stsrted hailing near the summit of Mallory. My descent was down the west chute of Mallory and over Arc Pass. The west chute with the rain and hail was like a scree-ski. When I got to Arc Pass it was now a hard rain. I went down the quickest way which seemed to be in the center gully. Very loose and dangerous with the wet conditions. Once at the bottom it was a relief to get off the loose rocks and walk on the frozen snow. The pictures are here.

Tomcat,

I have to click twice on the here. link to get the photos to pop up. The first click seems to adjust the text and the second click then goes to the photos. If this doesn't work then go to flickr.com and type in mallory irvine. This gets you to the one of the pictures in the album by me, spc. Hope this works for you.

Steve,

Great pics. I am hoping to do this climb in a month or two for the first time (as far as these summits are concerned). What was your approximate time from Camp Lake to Irvine summit? I have been to Meysan Lake before but no higher and will probably pack in, camp, and climb up and down the next day. Of course everyone is different but I am one of the lucky ones with no altitude issues and a strong hiker so I am assuming your time may be a good indicator of what I can pull off. Thanks,

Todd

Steve: Great pics! I know I've been looking at hittin' that area since hiking just on the Meysan Lake trail as a warm-up last year. That rain looked completely miserable! Thanks for posting them!

Thanks Laura!

Todd, I can get my times from the photo time stamps. Here they are for the entire hike:

0622 Start Meysan Lake Trail
0819 Arrive Camp Lake
1042 Summit Irvine (+2:23 from Camp Lake on North Ridge)
1220 Summit Mallory (Traverse the bowl)
1600 Back at Portal via Arc Pass and Main Trail

Camping definitely gives you quite a few climb options. From Camp Lake you have access to Lone Pine Peak, Irvine, Mallory, McAdie, LeConte, and Corcoran to name a few. If the weather would have been nicer I would have liked to climb McAdie. Good luck in your climbing.

Fantastic!
