Fellow mountain goats,

My brother and I are heading down from SF to try Whitney this weekend. Since he's in so-so condition (and is slow but *stubborn*), what would be a reasonable "turn-around" time on summit day if we're going to hike from Trail Camp to the top and back? If I don't have a set time, he'll may suffer all the way to the top after dark. (Trust me . . .)

I'm thinking around 4 p.m. at the latest. Of course the weather that day would affect the decision, but would continuing up after that time be a bad call?

Thanks.

A reasonable turnaround time would be one that has you back in Trail Camp by dark. On Saturday the sun sets at 7:13 PM. A simple turnaround time is half way between your start and the time you want to be back. If you start at first light 6:00 AM, then something like 1:00 PM would be time to turn back. You might fudge an hour to 2:00 PM since most of the way back is downhill. Coming down the switchbacks with headlamp or flashlight wouldn't be too bad, but I would not care to be between the summit and Trail Crest in the dark. The footing is too uneven and the drop offs too steep for my taste. Good luck!

Hard to give a one size fits all answer to your question. You need to think in terms of the risks and what you would be prepared and capable to do in order to deal with them. Some of the risks that come to mind are: climbing down in the dark (headlamps are always a good thing to carry), being too tired or not knowing the trail well enough to make it back down to camp (carry enough gear/food/water to survive the night out), running out of water or food (carry extra), late afternoon thiunderstorms (may need to turn around or get off the mountian fast). I generally figure half the time going down as it takes going up, so at 4 pm turnaround would mean about 3 1/2 hours of good light. If it took you about 7 hours to climb (at the the most difficult parts of) the trail going up, then 4 pm would be OK. I would tend to make it more like 3 pm if I were climbing with someone who's abilities were uncertain.

Three words: Whatever It Takes.

What's the rush? Trust me, I'm an expert in lengthy, time-consuming strolls through the high country.
