I heard that cats taste like chicken too! smile Don't know about marmots, but have certainly come in contact with a few nasty ones....maybe if everyone stops giving them handouts and leaving their stuff unattended they wouldn't be so "rude". They're smart little creatures!

I don't understand the marmots going thru packs. If packs are clean of food and all food is in a bear can (as required on this trail) there should be little problem with marmots other than begging (unless something is overly seasoned with sweat/salt).

It could be traces/smells from food that was once in the pack, and they figure it's "worth a look".

I have a couple of big plastic tubs I use in Yosemite campgrounds for camping gear (non-food) like lights, pots/pans, lanterns, etc., which would overfill the bear box. Rather than keep them in the car, even with no trace of food, I leave them out so a bear can explore them without ripping my window out, should he so desire. And at least once, they've done just that, with no harm done except picking up the items that were dumped out.

To a marmot, if pack=food, just seeing it may be enough.

Let's hope that that guy was back home in LA a couple of days later, turned on his faucet to get a drink, and got a glassful of soapsuds.

I'd hate to see anyone get in a fight, but maybe it's time those of us who observe this type of behavior speak up and say something? At least the culprit would get the idea that he/she is not going to get away with the behavior unchallenged. Also, perhaps it's simply ignorance, in which case (gasp) they might actually learn better. If it became known that this type of behavior was not going to be accepted by the rest of the community, maybe folks would think twice about it.

I realize this is a stretch. Nevertheless, are we all going to sit passively by and watch a few bad apples trash a place that we treasure? Or are we going to do something about it? Can't expect the Forest Service to police the place 24x7.

Personally, I usually say something when I see something not right----mentioning to trail cutters not to cut trails, people too close to water sources to move further away, people dropping trash to clean up, etc.....

I think most of the "abuses" come from ignorance. It constantly amazes me that people just don't think about the impact of their actions.

I thought long and hard about saying anything to him. There were two of them and I was by myself. I guess that is no excuse, and I felt worse later for not having said anything to him. Maybe like you said, he might just be an ignorant person when it comes to doing the right things in the mountains.

I was on whitneys summit on 6-27 and there were about 10 or so on the summit. So what. I did come through trail camp and yes there were a few people there but not even close to what I would call crowded. Not even close. I think that hiking Whitney in 1 day from the portal is one of the great day hikes in all the Sierras and everyone that I talked to seemed to be estatic in doing what they were doing. Mt. Whitney is no dump. The main trail is spectactular and maintained very well. I see the glass as more that half full, not half empty. I'm really excited about climbing it twice on my 50th birthday next June....
