I am not familiar with the 'bear boxes' mentioned at the trailheads. If we are leaving a car at the Portal for 5 days, it sounds like we need to leave coolers & other items (suggestions?) in these boxes. Are they open access to anyone? how big are they? Any pictures of what they look like? Is theft a problem? Is availability of space an issue? Thanks!

(click on "Bearproof food lockers", I thought the video was good, too)
The ones at the Portal are the larger ones.
They are open access (make SURE you lock them, test them!)

You want to leave everything with a scent in the lockers. Understand the consequences: A bear is strong. They will rip off your door, or knock out your window in a second if they think there is food inside, as easily as you would open a pop-top drink! In addition, if the rangers find your car in such a condition, they will give you an expensive ticket ($500?) for inappropriate food storage (which your insurance will NOT cover!!)
There are quite a few lockers at the trailhead, but they do tend to fill up, especially on weekends. It is much better to have stuff in boxes, rather than bags (they stack), it is much better not to take a bunch of stuff that has to be stored.

Does one REALLY need to have a cooler? they take up SO much space!

LABEL YOUR BOXES WITH YOUR NAME AND A DATE THAT YOU WILL REMOVE THEM. People tend to leave stuff, making it a garbage heap. Periodically, unlabeled stuff gets removed, particularly if it is there for a bunch of days.

This unfortunate Jetta owner was in for a big surprise upon return from the backcountry. He didn't follow the rules and left some dog food in the car. The picture was taken at the Onion Valley trailhead parking lot on 09-17-2005.
