A friend and I went up to Lower Boy Scout Lake, then turned north into "Carillon Canyon." Came down the drainage that bypasses the whole North Fork trail and ends on the main Whitney trail, where the Carillon Creek sign is. The descent route is much brushier than six years ago. Pictures

Many times I have wondered if you could go up or down the Carillon Creek drainage between the trail at Carillon creek to Carillon Canyon.
It was nice to finally see pictures of what is actually there....just another fascinating area off the regular trail.
Thanks for posting

Great pics, as always, Bob. I'm sorry we missed ya at the Portal Sunday afternoon. I sure could've used your advice when I got to Muir! (I had your pics printed out and got scared off by the exposure. Oh well, it'll still be there and I'm going back up in August!). Good times, Laura

Thanks Bob...... I especially enjoy picture number 48 (don't slip). How did you get Chuck to pose like that? Special effects?
Thanks again

Nice to see that bushwhacking never goes out of style. (I'll take willow any day over manzanita though...)

Hi Moose Tracks. My name's Greg Lukenbill, GLuke on the message board. I'm a special ed. teacher in the Inland Empire. I'm doing a day hike of Whitney on July 1 and was going to try and attempt to summit Muir. You talked about the exposure and BobR's pictures. Could you possibly give me that link of BobR's pics and any advice. I'm not taking a rope or pro. I'm going to see if I can do it. If not, I know the mountain's not going anywhere. Any advice would be terrific. Thanks, Greg Lukenbill

Dang! The redline route was the secondary one I tried and still got stuck on! I knew it connected up somehow. Oh well, like I said I'll be back in August and it might be a good time to give it another go. GLuke: I got Bob's photos thru his flickr.com site. So if you use the link earlier in this thread to get there, then look for the his most recent Whitney (anniversary stay on the summit) album, they're all in there. -L

What time in August are you headed up. I will be coming off the summit August 25 with a group and plan the side trip to Muir.
GLuKe: The pics show up on the thread. Must be something going on with your browser.

Can you cross over the sierra crest here to Tulainyo Lake, cos thats what i'm hoping to do this summer but haven't seen any reports of the route.

It would probably be easiest to go over the saddle between Mt. Russell and Mt. Carillon.

I'm curious -- your 5th picture shows you traversing a part of the ledges I don't think I've ever used. Where was it?

Laura,
I've done Muir -- I rockclimb, and although the exposure was there, there was a way around it. I was the only woman at the time, and was sent up first to see if a route would work for the other non-climbers... "she who dares"!! I love it!
