As Doug stated in one of his trivia questions a while back, there is another Carillon Creek crossing:

that is just a few (hundred) feet up the trail from the Portal. Everybody seems to forget about this. (It would be interesting to hear Bob's rating of the water quality since it's subjected to so much traffic.) It's also almost irrelevant because of the proximity to the Portal, although it does come in handy if it's not frozen in the winter.
