Apologies, but I just couldn't resist the temptation to joke about the joking around on the summit.

Where'd you go in Nepal (another addiction)? Any photo albums?

The Langtang region, about 50 miles west of Everest. The people are amazing and the mountains will take your breath away. Photos yes but only on my computer not on shuttlefly or Kodak.

Sierra Snail, thanks for that link. I understand how that man feels. Apology accepted. Maybe our paths will cross again in the BC.

Hi treereider

I am looking to do a trek in the Himalaya's within the next couple of years. I had considered the two obvious choices; the EBC and AC trek. I was leaning toward the AC trek because I believed it was the "trek less traveled". I was told today (on another mountain forum) that the AC is actually more traveled. Would you be so kind as to post some basic info on your trek to the Langtang region? I am assuming it is much less commercialized. Also, what do you classify the degree of difficulty?

Thanks in advance!!!

Btw, big time congrats on your summit of Mt. Whitney via the MR. Great accomplishment!

Mountain Climber,
I can't really tell you about the AC or EBC. Because I did not hike either of those routes. But what I have heard is very similar to the advice you have heard. AC is very busy but you can spread out and see quite a bit of terrain and while hiking for a few weeks. Everest Base Camp sounds like a great trip, at about 18,000 feet you got to love going up. I have heard both good and bad about this trip. The good being you are hiking up to Base Camp and get a great view of Everest, while hiking on a trail that has so much history. The bad is the traffic and yak dust. The yaks are huge animals and they kick up a ton of dust, not something I want to breathe in while trying to get to 18,000ft. Langtang is definitely less touristy, it was not common to see western trekkers while on this route. The Nepalese people are so hospitable, and are willing to open up and show you there culture. The hiking is not really that hard unless you attempt to go over a few of the passes “I don’t remember the names of the passes.” Langtang stands at about 23,000 feet and is simply amazing, and no I did not go to the top, “forgot my ice ax haha”. There are plenty of smaller peeks in the basin that you can climb for great views. You are only about a mile or so away from the border of Tibet, just something I though was pretty cool. Anyways hope that helps, if you have anymore questions, Ill shoot you my phone # and we can talk. Enjoy this day.

Thanks treereider

Much appreciated! Great info. I also sent you a pm before I realized this topic had been moved.

I got back late on Friday from my EBC trek. I wouldnt say this is the best time of the year to go as it was a bit cloudy. We didnt even make it to Kalapatar because we wouldnt be able to see anything. I did make it to Base Camp though. If anyone needs any info on this trip, let me know. I would be happy to hook you up with all the info you need and a great guide.

Did you end up going with Nature Trails?

Sorry to hear about the cloud cover, but May is heading into the monsoon season up there.

Were there any climbers remaining in BC while you were there? That can sometimes be a lot of fun, although sometimes, the climbers don't want to have anything to do with trekkers due to the possibility of "picking something up" that will ruin they're chances of a summit.

I went with a guide that works for another company. I hired him privately and he really made the trip a success.
I could have used a little bit less cloud cover. It was kinda neat to watch some of the clouds move in and out from from the peak. The higher up we went above Perriche, the worse the weather became and we saw snow at both Thukla and Gorak Shep.
We met a couple of guys coming down from BC3 trying to get rid of a cough. One of the guys went on to summit according to the company website. That was pretty cool.
I think one of the highlights was the Kumbu Icefall. Its almost like being on a different planet. I didnt see too many other climbers but base camp was filled with tents. Its a surreal place.
I would say the worst part of the trip was actually Kathmandu. Its overcrowded, noisey and people smoke way too much. Overall, it was the trip of a lifetime

Regarding the first: nice way to save some money. I've been debating whether I want to go this route the next time I head over, the problem being that the owner/managing director of the agency that I use is considered a friend, making me feel a little guilty about doing it.

Regarding the second: since my first trip over, I've refused to stay in Kathmandu longer than a day, or two, on either end of the trip (at the risk of missing a flight out, though) because of what you mention, and the street vendors that'll drive you crazy when you try and walk around.
