I've seen replicas of the Whitney summit medallions, but haven't been able to find a way to buy them via interenet, by phone, etc. Anyone know whether/how to get them from Whitney Portal Store (they don't show up on their ebay site) or ?

You can get those at the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association's store. The address is http://www.sgwa.org/store.htm.

You can also find benchmark replicas (pins, pendants and earrings) at Mountainclimb.

Why don't you take some paper and charcoal and do a rubbing of them. To me that seems far more authentic than buying replicas.

Wow. I gotta admit I'd never thought of the paper and charcoal thing. I was given a Whitney benchmark replica as a gift and think it's great. But for personal posterity I love the rubbing idea. Paper and charcoal are going along in my pack from now on. Thanks Mike!

Personally, I collect photos of the summit benchmarks...always have my camera around my neck anyway.

However, the idea of buying the miniature replicas isn't so odd if you're the sort who has a collection of pins on a hat, jacket or vest. Kinda hard to put a charcoal rubbing on your hat...

I've started to collect the pins, too...thinking of sticking them in a wall map of the U.S., sort of like the map of the world my wife keeps up with pushpins in each of the countries we've visited. (I collect mountains...she collects countries...to each their own...)

You can buy replicas of summit medalions directly from the manufacturer at geositu.com. This where the San Gorgonio store, mentioned in a previous post, gets them and where the Whitney Store getes them. They have a wide range of medalions, including ones for San Jacinto, White Mountain Peak, Whitney, Gorgonio, and a host of others all over the world.
